North Thanetís MP, Roger Gale, has this week joined former Liverpool and England Footballer (And "Strictly Come Dancing" participant!) John Barnes at the House of Commons to back the CCPR (Central Council for Physical Recreation) campaign to get more financial support down to grass roots and, particularly, to clubs that do not have premises and facilities of their own and cater for young people.
Speaking at the Commons on Tuesday the MP said:
"Each week hundreds of young people across North Thanet and throughout East Kent take part in events organised by local voluntary clubs - from football to basketball, from hockey to trampolining and athletics.
At present some of these clubs are receiving money through the Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) scheme - but not to support their work with young people.
This campaign is designed to extend the benefits of CASC to include tax relief on junior subscriptions for sports clubs. That could release money to pay for anything from new team kit to rowing boats or basket balls. This is all particularly relevant in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games".
