Campaigning

Last night I voted to protect Hospices and GPs from Labour’s job tax. Unfortunately, Labour voted against protecting them.	you will also have a by-election to elect your new councillor to represent you on Thanet District Council. Ash Ashbee, who is our candidate for this by-election, I believe brings the expertise, experience and commitment that the residents of Thanet Villages deserve. Ash’s work whilst leader of the council speaks for itself and I have no hesitation in asking the residents of Minster, Acol, Monkton, Manston, Sarre and St Nicholas in voting for Ash Ashbee on Thursday 1st May.	I have worked very closely with them all over a number of years and have personally seen their dedication to representing and helping people. I have no hesitation in endorsing their candidacies. Please vote for them on Thursday 1st May.
The candidates are: 🔹Louise Harvey-Quirke (Herne Village and Sturry) 🔹Dan Watkins (Herne Bay East) 🔹Derek Crow-Brown & Phil Fellows (Birchington and Rural) 🔹Sue Chandler (Sandwich and the villages)	My Association has worked hard to select, from a strong field, candidates that bring experience, passion and determination to helping and representing their residents.	In just over a month residents from across our county will be going to the polls to vote for who they want to represent them on Kent County Council.
While the debate on agriculture was taking place in the Chamber these farmers were once again protesting outside the Palace of Westminster. They are not ‘rich landowners’ trying to avoid paying taxes . They are hard-working people trying to make a living off the land while growing the crops that feed us and its time that a city/centric Government woke up to the fact that most of rural England depends upon them for its livelihood and stopped persecuting them. With Chordoma survivor comedian Matt Forde at the House to promote the cause of the provision of sanitary bins in men’s lavatories. Not a subject that you will find on the Order Paper every day- but for those like Matt, who need them, the absence of this necessary item can be no laughing matter. We owe it to Prostate Cancer UK and its supporters to get this simple issue addressed.
Anne Puckridge will celebrate her 100th Birthday just before Christmas. Sadly, although she paid national insurance contributions throughout her working life in the UK her pension was frozen when she retired to live in Canada. I and the All-Party Group that I chaired throughout the last parliament believe that the UK should treat this as a debt of honour and at least uprate overseas pensions, if only based upon today’s rates, for those who have paid their dues.	I am pleased that today the "Puppy Smuggling Bill", which I supported, unexpectedly has been voted through to a Second Reading. It now stands a reasonable chance in becoming law in due course.	At the end of a long farming day I attended a briefing by RABI - the farmers charity. A survey of more than 15,000 farming people has revealed that: 🔹Over a third were suffering from depression 🔹Almost half experienced anxiety 🔹A fifth knew someone who had attempted suicide in the last five years and 🔹One in ten young (16-24) said that they were lonely If you are a member of our farming community and you need help you can reach RABI on their freephone helpline - 0800 288 4444.

Labour’s ‘Family Farm Tax’ will for some be the last straw. What developers have failed to destroy of The Garden of England, The Chancellor of the Exchequer is set to finish off. Sign the petition to help save our farmers	The agricultural land that we need to feed our country is being developed for unwanted housing, our farmers in Kent cannot hire the overseas workers that they need to harvest the crops and now the government is threatening to curtail vital support payments for our farmers. If we do not back our farmers and buy British then our children and our grandchildren will find themselves held hostage to the need to import food to put on their tables. This is a crisis that has to be addressed immediately.	I supported the maintenance of the winter fuel payment in the voting lobby today. This vicious Government measure is a policy made in Downing Street. It has nothing to do with the state of the nation’s finances or the ‘black hole’ created in large part by inflationary pay increases for public sector workers and train drivers but was raised in the Commons by the current Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, as long ago as 2014! Part of Starmer’s hidden agenda that did not feature in Labour’s election manif

Manston Airport🛫 A correct result. Appeal dismissed. Judges unanimous. Now we can move forward to generate the job creating net-zero carbon state of the art airport that most people in East Kent want to see operating as soon as possible.	I wholeheartedly endorse the views expressed by the Westgate and Garlinge Action Group in respect of the potential use of farmland in Shottendane as a travellers` campsite. I recognise that the Council has a statutory duty to provide such a site but the Garlinge/Shottendane land is ill-suited to the purpose and there are other and potentially more acceptable sites available. They showed me the crabbing pool and I think it’s brilliant news they have been able to secure its future by getting the funding from Southern Water and the agreement from Council to get it fixed for the summer season. We have a clear message, if you want Manston Airport to re-open - vote Conservative on 4th May. I’m looking forward to going out with our other Conservative candidates in North Thanet.
		A good meeting with “Save Our Fields” campaigner Ellie Golding following the release of her excellent video. Downing Street needs to listen - it is the future of Ellie’s generation that the Government is threatening to cover with tarmac.

A great deal on the agenda for the coming parliamentary year.	I was very happy to be able to sign the 'Youth Friendly MP Charter'. As MPs, we must be able to talk to and help everyone.
