Fwd: Press Release: Thanet MPs, Craig Mackinlay MP and Sir Roger Gale MP, encourage local schools to enter competition to tackle litter
May 15th 2018
Local MP’s, Sir Roger Gale and Craig Mackinlay, are encouraging primary schools in Thanet to take part in a poster competition in an effort to tackle litter.
The constituency-wide competition is being run by Kent based anti-litter charity, Litter Angels, which was set up to educate children about the impact that litter has on our local environment. The charity is backed by McDonald’s and Keep Britain Tidy.
For the first time, Litter Angels is inviting Year 5 pupils in every primary school across Thanet to take part in this year’s competition, which will take place during September and October. The theme of this year’s competition is how litter harms the seaside.
Schools that agree to take part will receive a lesson pack in September with instructions on how to enter.
Once all the entries have been received they will then be narrowed down to one winner from each school which will be announced at a special presentation evening towards the end of the year. Each winner will receive a goodie bag containing a certificate, a personalised mug and a copy of the Litter Angels storybook.
One overall winning poster will be displayed in McDonald’s car parks across Thanet and both the school and winning pupil will each win a cash prize.
Gordon Henderson MP, Chairman of Litter Angels, said:
‘Litter is a major issue and so one way of tackling that is to teach future generations the impact litter has on our environment, using a fun and artistic approach, in the hope they will not drop litter and take pride in where they live and play.’
South Thanet’s Craig Mackinlay MP, commented:
“Litter blights our towns and roadsides, and spoils our enjoyment of both the seaside and countryside. It is also incredibly expensive, costing local councils hundreds of millions of pounds a year to clear up. That is why both Sir Roger and I are calling on all schools in Thanet to take part in the Litter Angels competition and help to promote keeping our Isle tidy.”
North Thanet’s Sir Roger Gale MP, added:
“This competition, which Gordon has promoted in other parts of Kent, has proved highly successful and I am delighted that Thanet is now being offered the chance to participate. I hope that all of the primary schools in North Thanet will take part and look forward, with Craig, to congratulating the winner in person and seeing the winning poster displayed across Thanet in due course.”
