North Thanet`s MP, Sir Roger Gale, has called on the Prime Minister to seek backing from the leaders of the Council of Europe to speak out against Russian attacks on democratic society.
Intervening in the House of Commons following the Prime Minister`s statement on Monday Sir Roger, who is the Leader of the UK delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the 47 Member States of the Council of Europe said:
“Will the Prime Minister call on the Secretary General of the Council of Europe (Thorburn Jagland) and the President of the Parliamentary Assembly (Michele Nicoletti) and the Assembly itself to support the UK delegation in our condemnation of actions by the government of the Russian Federation that are not acceptable in a civilised society”?
Responding, Theresa May said that she would join the UK delegation in making their request.
Speaking after the exchange Sir Roger said:
“I have asked the Prime Minister to write to the Secretary General and to the President of the Assembly to press for their public support: I have the impression that while the UK has received much backing for our principled stand against the actions of the Russian Federation there are elements within the Council of Europe who see appeasement as the right response and that is unacceptable.”
