In answer to the question “ Do I believe that Assad attacked his own people in Douma”? The answer is “yes”.
I do believe that Assad used - as he has done in the past - chemical weapons against his own people.
I also believe that we cannot permit Syria and Russia to flout the Chemical Weapons agreement (which Russia has signed) with impunity.
On a personal note I have five grandchildren whose future I want to be secure. I know, also, that the bodies of the children murdered in Syria were other people’s grandchildren and I do not believe that we can sit idly by while other atrocities are committed- as they will be if we tolerate the use, anywhere, of chemical weapons.
We have to support our NATO allies in concerted, appropriate and proportionate response and I am confident that that is the position that will be taken on behalf of the United Kingdom by the Prime Minister following the meeting of the Cabinet today.
